Description
Every month members of the Urbandale Chamber come together to network, enjoy lunch and listen to a speaker to learn about happenings in Urbandale and around the Greater Des Moines Area.
"Forgive but don't forget".
In 1940, Holocaust survivor David Wolnerman told one lie to Josef Mengele, the Nazi nicknamed "The Angel of Death", that saved his life. In a different concentration camp, a female Nazi guard 'took a liking' to Jennie Wolnerman but while on a Nazi death march, Jennie was caught stealing a loaf of bread. The Nazi guard who caught her told her "If you have the ability to steal from a Nazi guard, you will make it through this."
The two later met in post-war Munich, Germany, married and eventually moved to America.
Their son, Michael, shares their stories of incredible tragedy and triumph. Jennie passed away in January of this year and David is now believed to be the last survivor in Des Moines. They both felt strongly about never wanting future generations to forget the Holocaust, so join us this month to allow their stories to be continued to be told.
